You may remember a few years back as the World No. 1 in women’s tennis. You may also remember that she only had moderate success as the top-seed. But at 25, Ana Ivanovic is both a little older and a little wiser – and that was proven this morning with her opening-round win at the Rogers Cup.

After making short work of her opponent, Sum-Wei Hseih of Taiwan, Ivanovic told the media in her post-match press conference what she intended to focus on while in Toronto.

“I’m looking forward to consistency and especially coming off how I played well last week,” noted the Serbian. “I hope keep (sic) that momentum going and to keep playing well here.”

When asked about how her elevated maturity has helped with her recent success, Ivanovic became philosophical stating, “We mature, we grow up, we were young, we get older. It really is at the moment how you feel and I do feel very fit physically and I don’t feel old in that sense.”

With her victory this morning, the 25-year-old Ivanovic will now square off against Italian Flavia Pinnetta in the next round of the Rogers Cup.

When asked to talk about her experience in Toronto, Ivanovic, while admitting she didn’t have a chance to go anywhere yet this year, did say she loves coming to the city and, as some incentive, has a childhood friend who lives in Toronto so, for the Serbian, “that’s also another nice thing to do and catch up.”

It may still be early but despite no longer being the No. 1 seed in women’s tennis, Ana Ivanovic looks a lot better now than when she was the top seed. She has certainly matured both physically and mentally and with that, is determined to climb back on top of the WTA rankings.

First, we will have to see how she fares at the Rogers Cup – a tournament she calls “a great preparation” especially being right in the middle of two of tennis’s biggest grand slams: Wimbledon and the US Open.

It’s so far, so good for Ana Ivanovic here in Toronto and as far as I’m concerned, I won’t be the least bit surprised to see the 25-year-old hanging around by the weekend.

She has the experience of being No. 1 under her belt and now Ana Ivanovic has a glorious opportunity to play like the No. 1 seed she was a short time ago.
