For the second time in as many weeks, Fabio Fognini won an ATP Event. Fresh off of his title in Stuttgart, Fognini won another clay court event in Hamburg last week.
The two Championships are the first ATP Career titles for the Italian and keeps a 10 match winning streak alive. He has won 25 matches on clay this season. With his recent success, Fognini has moved to 19th in the ATP rankings with the U.S. Open approaching in just over a month.
Fognini will attempt to keep his streak alive this week at the Vegeta Croatia Open Umag, an ATP 250 event. Richard Gasquet is the top seed while Andreas Seppi is the two seed in the clay court event.
The Italian is scheduled to play in two Emirates Airline U.S. Open Series events in August. He is in the field of the Rogers Cup in Montreal, the first week of August. The following week he is set to play in the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. These are two ATP 1000 events leading up to the U.S. Open and feature the top players in the World.
Fognini, who is 26 years old, has long been one of the most charismatic and likeable players on the tour. He is playing the best tennis of his career but only has a 3-5 lifetime record at the U.S. Open, the last major of the season. His best finish in a Major was the quarterfinals at the French Open in 2011. While having success on the clay courts, his game has not translated to the hard courts yet. But with back to back titles under his belt, he enters the U.S. hard court season with momentum.
