It took him the full three sets but Richard Gasquet, having already won this morning, was victorious against this evening, defeating American Mardy Fish 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the semi-final of the Rogers Cup.
The 26-year-old Frenchman was resilient this evening, rebounding after losing the first set to Fish. Gasquet hung tight and dominated the next two sets, showing no ill effects from his 3rd round match just nine hours earlier.
Gasquet will now wait and see who his semi-final opponent will be. He will meet the winner of the John Isner/Milos Raonic matchup, which is scheduled to begin in just a few minutes from now.
Despite winning the 2002 French Open and Olympic bronze just a couple of weeks ago in doubles competition, Richard Gasquet has yet to make his mark in singles competition. His semi-final appearance at Wimbledon in 2007 was perhaps his most notable accomplishment as a singles player. Of course, he hopes to change that this time around as he looks to make some noise winning the Rogers Cup as the #14 seed.
So, Richard Gasquet is moving on as he awaits his next opponent, to be determined before the night is over.
