aAmerican Steve Johnson upset 2nd seed Andreas Seppi in Winston-Salem on Tuesday. In a day that several Americans were bumped out of the tournament, Johnson fought back from a set down to defeat Seppi, 6-7, 6-4, 7-5.
Johnson, who was a qualifier for the tournament, joins Sam Querrey as one of only two Amercans in the round of 16 after James Blake, Mardy Fish, Tim Smyczek and Denis Kudla all fell.
"Hopefully, it’s just another step in the right direction,” he said. “I felt like everything I’ve been kind of working on the last four, five, six months kind of came together.” Johnson said after the match.
The former NCAA Champion from Southern Cal, fired 15 aces and won 82 percent of his first serve. He broke Seppi 3 times in the match.
The American will go on to face Yen-Hsun Lu in the round of 16.
