Third seeded Maria Sharapova was far from sharp but good enough to advance to the second round over unseeded Brit Heather Watson, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Sharapova aided Watson with 58 unforced errors but her 41 winners carried her through and on to the second round.

Watson would not go away, serving well and taking advantage of Sharapova's rusty play. Based on her play today, the 19 year old has a bright future in the game.

Sharapova will face the winner of the Anastasiva Yakimova - Noppawan Lertcheewakarn match, in round two.
